In today’s fast-paced digital world, Telegram has become a preferred communication platform for journalists worldwide due to its speed, encryption, and user-friendly interface. However, journalists working with sensitive information and confidential sources must be especially mindful of Telegram data privacy to protect themselves, their sources, and their stories from surveillance, hacking, or leaks. Understanding Telegram’s privacy features and adopting best practices can significantly enhance journalistic security.

1. Use Secret Chats for Sensitive Conversations

Telegram offers two types of chats: cloud chats and telegram data Secret Chats. While cloud chats are encrypted between your device and Telegram servers, Telegram retains access to these messages on its cloud, which may be vulnerable under certain conditions. Secret Chats, however, provide end-to-end encryption, meaning only the communicating parties can read the messages. This level of encryption is essential for journalists who handle sensitive information or communicate with whistleblowers. To start a Secret Chat, open the contact’s profile and select “Start Secret Chat.”

2. Enable Two-Step Verification

Protecting your Telegram account from unauthorized access is critical. Enable two-step verification by adding a password on top of the standard SMS-based login. This prevents hackers or unauthorized parties from taking control of your account even if they gain access to your phone number or SIM. Find this feature in Settings > Privacy and Security > Two-Step Verification.

3. Manage Active Sessions Regularly

Telegram allows users to check all devices currently logged into their account. Journalists should frequently review and terminate any suspicious or unfamiliar active sessions under Settings > Devices. This reduces the risk of covert account monitoring by third parties.

4. Be Cautious About Group and Channel Participation

Public Telegram groups and channels can be monitored by hostile actors or government agencies. When discussing sensitive topics or sourcing information, avoid sharing identifying details in public or large groups. Prefer private groups with trusted members or one-on-one Secret Chats for confidential communication.

5. Limit Personal Information Sharing

Minimize the amount of personal information visible on your Telegram profile, including your phone number, profile picture, and bio. Use Telegram’s privacy settings to restrict who can see your phone number or last seen status. This helps protect your identity and reduces the chances of targeted attacks or surveillance.

6. Use Self-Destruct Timers

Secret Chats allow messages to self-destruct after a set time. Enabling this feature ensures sensitive information is automatically deleted from both devices, reducing the risk of data being exposed if your phone is lost or seized.

7. Stay Updated with the Latest App Versions

Telegram regularly updates its app to patch security vulnerabilities and improve privacy features. Journalists should keep their apps up to date to benefit from the latest protections against evolving threats.

8. Consider Additional Security Tools

For extra anonymity, journalists may combine Telegram with VPNs or the Tor network to mask their IP addresses and location. This reduces the risk of being tracked by governments or hostile actors during critical communications.
