In January 2020, We are Social and Hootsuite published the Digital 2020 Global Overview Report, along with statistics on the digital situation in Colombia during 2019 and 2020.

If you have ever wondered how many people use the Internet in Colombia? How many active users are there on social networks? Which are the most downloaded social networks and applications in our country? How much time do Colombians spend connected to the Internet? Keep reading! The following data will surprise you.


The Global Digital Report has been published every year since 2012 with the aim of statistically demonstrating the growth in the use of mobile devices, the Internet, websites, digital networks and mobile apps in the daily lives of people around the world.

This year's report used data provided by the following statistical consultancies: GlobalWebIndex , Statista , GSMA Intelligence , App Annie , SimilarWeb , Locowise; which were dedicated to collecting data on the digital situation of approximately 153 countries. Among them, of course, is our country: Colombia.

In the following lines, we will discuss the results obtained by Colombia in relation to the use of digital platforms, as well as the behavior of its consumers during 2019 and 2020.

The general state of mobile, Internet and social media use

In Colombia, the total population is made up of 50.61 million people, of which 81% live in urbanized areas.

Interestingly, the number of connected phones in the country, which is 60.38 million, exceeds the total population (50.61 million), standing at 119%.

This is explained by understanding that there are people who have more than one active telephone line, divided into: local telephone, corporate or work telephone, alternative telephone for travel, among others.

On the other hand, the number of users connected to the Internet is 35 million, that is, 69% of the total population has access to this service. At the same time, the same number of people are active users of social networks.

Therefore, it could be said that all Internet users in Colombia actively use social networks.

Compared to 2019, the population in Colombia grew by 1.2%. This represents an increase of 611 thousand people.

Similarly, mobile phone connections have also shown an increase of 3.3% since last year, which translates into 1.9 million new mobile devices connected.

In one year (from 2019 to 2020), the number of Internet users increased by 2.9%, representing more than one million new users of the service.

Regarding this last figure, it should be noted that the number of users connected in April and not January 2019 was taken as a reference to calculate it.

Taking the total population of Internet users as a basis, this section divides into percentages the number of users between 16 and 64 years of age who own the following technological devices:

Cell phone (any type): 96% .
Smartphones: 93%.
Mobile phone without “smart” features: 17%.
Laptop or desktop computer (PC): 79%.
Tablets: 42%.
Smart TV for watching online content (like Netflix): 13%.
Video game console: 35%.
Smart Home Device : 11%.
Smart watches: 15%.
Virtual reality devices: 3.1%.

Considering Internet users between 16 and 64 years of age, the study showed that they manage their time on a daily basis in the following way:

9 hours and 10 minutes using the Internet.
3 hours and 35 minutes using social media.
3 hours and 30 minutes watching television.
1 hour and 24 minutes listening to music through streaming services (like Spotify).
0 hours and 53 minutes using video game consoles.
